Remember that in .NET value types are stored on the stack while reference types on the heap 🙂

Value types (like int, bool, decimal) are stored on a data structure called stack. It's a LIFO collection perfect for storing anything that may be needed soon 👌

Reference types (string or object) are stored on the data structure called heap. It can be imagined as a series of boxes which can be accessed at any time (we have access to any of them, not only to the top one as it is in case of stack) 😉

It's also important to know that as soon as a reference type is created, it's address in the memory (reference to the object) is stored on the stack, while the actual data of the object is stored on a heap (in the memory place pointed by this address) 👍

It's important to know because of at least two reasons 😊
✔️ it's often asked on the interviews 😂
✔️ it's a reason why reference types are passed by reference to another methods, while value types are passed as a copy 👍

If you write unit tests using MSTest, the easiest way to execute the tests on your local development machine is to set post-build event for your tests project 😉

Just go to project's properties - Build Events tab and in field "post-build event command line" type: CD "$(TargetDir)" "$(DevEnvDir)MSTEST.exe" /testcontainer:"$(TargetFileName)"

It will make unit tests executed after each build with results in "Output" window 👍

Refactor your C#/VB code in Visual Studio with "Extract Method" quick action 😊

Visual Studio offers Quick Actions, which allow you to take certain actions with your source code. Quick Actions is a yellow bulb 💡 which appears on the left side of code editor 👍

There's a group of actions related to refactoring. One of them is extracting code, from which one of the most useful actions is method extraction 😉

You just select your code and use yellow bulb 💡 to select the "Extract Method" action. You can also use Ctrl+. keyboard shortcut to open code refactoring actions 😉
------
I especially recommend to extract all foreach loops as separate methods (see screenshot). It makes your code much more readable 👍

Visual Studio's build error tells you nothing? Try changing build's output verbosity! 😊

Have you ever get an unclear and telling-you-nothing error message in Visual Studio's output window? 🤔

If yes, then before checking StackOverflow 😁, try going to Tools - Options - Projects and Solutions - Build and Run and change "MSBuild project build output verbosity" 😉

The default "Minimal" value makes your output not polluted with every step of the build, but sometimes it can be insufficient to find issue source. If you change it for instance for "Diagnostic" you'll see all detailed steps during the build process.
It saved my life few times already 😉

Try it yourself to see what's the difference between "Minimal" and "Diagnostic" modes. It becomes very useful when error message in the output window is not clear, which happens often with Xamarin for instance 👍

Given-When-Then pattern is based on dividing each unit test into 3 parts 🔧:
1️⃣Given - pre-conditions, state of the world before the tested behavior happens ✔️
2️⃣When - tested behavior, method to be executed or property change, depending on what's tested ✔️
3️⃣Then - expected result, so in practice our Assert ✔️

It's very practical, fits most cases and enforces to keep your unit test simple and really UNIT 😉

Get familiar with and use Dependency Injection 👍

Dependency Injection is a concept of supplying the dependencies into our objects/constructs from outside. It makes our code loosely-coupled 👍
------
The simplest Dependency Injection we can use is implementing our classes with interfaces. All necessary methods are defined in an interface and everywhere where we need our instance, we just use interface (not a class).
Concrete implementations are defined in classes implementing the interface 😉
------
An example is present on the picture: WindowsFileSystem class requires IFilesManager to be able to manage files. If we implemented WindowsFilesManager as a class (without the interface), we'd need to store it in WindowsFileSystem as a peoperty of WindowsFilesManager type 😒

Introducing an interface "injected" via constructor makes it possible to:
✔️ Replace IFilesManager by different implementation (e.g. LinuxFilesManager) 👍
✔️ Easily replace IFilesManager by its fake implementation in unit tests👍

So even if you have only a single implementation of an interface it's sometimes worth introducing it (see second point above) 😉

There are also a lot of Dependencies Injection containers/frameworks like NDepend, which allow to make DI automatic and more sophisticated 😉

Dependency Injection is also built-in in ASP.NET Core 😉

There are two ways of comparing stuff in JS:
❌== and != operators ☹️
✔️=== and !== operators 😎

Why are the second "longer" ones better? Because the == and != operators perform an implicit types coercion before comparing the values 😦

It means that before comparing the values, if compared variables are of different types, "silent" types conversion occurs first 😦

It leads to strange results like:
⚡'' == '0' // false
⚡0 == '' // true
and many more 🔥

✔️ That's why I advise you to always use === and !== operators 😀
=== returns false if the compared variables are of different types 😉

Comparison of the actual values using ===/!== is performed only when both variables are of the same type 💪

I've tested a lot of unit tests naming styles, but this one seems the easiest and universal one 👍

Each unit test method should be called according to the pattern: Should_ExpectedResult_When_Condition 📝 "ExpectedResult" - what you expect the test's result to be 📜
"Condition" - under which condition the ExpectedResult should be met 📃

From my experience, such naming makes your tests serve as your code's documentation only by reading test methods signatures 😉

Independently from the programming language, proper naming is a key in making our and other developers' work easier 👍

Most of us spend more time reading code than writing it. Meaningful names of variables, methods and classes make understanding someone else's code (or our own after a while) muuuuuch faster! 🔥

Very simple rules when creating a new variable/class/method are:
✔️ don't be afraid of using long names - "customerAddressData" is better than "custAdDa" 👍
✔️ express what the method/variable/class does so it's clear without seeing its implementation 👍
✔️ KISS - Keep It Simple, Stupid - even a kid should understand what your code does 👍
✔️ avoid general-purpose elements like "MiscHelpers" class or "Process" method - they can do nothing or anything 👍
✔️ when your team has their own naming conventions, follow them and don't invent your own rules 👍
------
Next time when writing your code think if a 10-years-old would understand it when asked to read it - it really helps! 😊

🔥"foreach" - generates foreach loop
🔥. "prop" - generates a property inside a class

The snippets can be used in a context also - if you select some code and use Ctrl+K,X keyboard shortcut, you can choose a snippet to generate with the selected code already inside it 😎
